I like you emphasis on excitement. Content that generates not just interest, but excitement can be explosive for your visibility. Any successful website needs quality content with some buzz added to it!

Very true indeed. I've bought many things simply based on a friend saying it was good. No research on my part, no price comparisons, no scam checks... just paid for it. It's surprising how many companies don't foster this sort of consumer evangelism from their customers.

If a close friend of yours excitedly talking about a product, none of the marketing campaigns in this world can compete with the that.

In my humble opinion, there is no better advertising than word of mouth. People tend to believe others who are obviously happy with their choice of products. On the opposite side, a poor word of mouth campaign, against a product is even more effective. This is why most smart companies hire a good PR firm. To avoid the bad-mouthing that may occur.

I agree. If people aren't getting excited enough about your product to tell someone else/friends chances are its not word of mouth marketing.

Word of mouth to me was the first marketing strategy. It's a natural way to promote a product that conveys trust and transparency. As more and more people get online we'll see word of mouth marketing disappear to offline ads.

Yes, i think word of mouth marketing is most effective marketing method. And it is best also, because there are no costs at all. If people market your product themselves you can't get off the sight, and you will get excellent brand for your product. The only "small" problem is how to make such a remarkable product :).
